COURSE INFORMATION

This is a three-hour credit reading course which meets three hours a week for sixteen weeks. In this course you'll be exposed to different types of texts as to give you more a comprehensive picture of academic reading. You will be introduced to skills that go beyond basic reading comprehension to prepare you for your university education.

Topics covered will include:

  1. types of paragraph development (cause and effect, comparison and contrast, definition, classification, and time-order.
  2. inferring main ideas in paragraph.
  3. connotative language use
  4. bias
  5. author's purpose
  6. graphic materials-determining value of visual aids
  7. figurative language

Assessments:

Standardized quizzes (3) 30%

Reading Journal (4) 20%

Final Examination 50%
